What to do after a car crash

Car crashes are disorienting, shocking and scary. But, there are actions you can take to help yourself and those involved get help and recover more quickly. Here’s what to do after you’ve been in a car crash.

Dial 911
Stay calm with deep breaths and answer the emergency dispatcher’s questions. Law enforcement and EMTs will respond as quickly as possible. If you’re not sure what to do next, the emergency dispatcher can provide support and talk you through your best course of action.

Assess and assist
Only if you are able to, render first aid to others while you wait for emergency services to arrive. If it’s unsafe to leave your car, keep your seatbelt on and turn on your hazard lights. If you can leave the car, move to a safe location away from the road.

Document
Obtain the other driver’s information and gather evidence. Take photos of:

  • The driver, passengers and witnesses
  • The vehicle, including license plate
  • The other driver’s license
  • The other driver’s insurance card
  • The position of the cars and other evidence that could get cleaned up after the car wreck.
  • Take a detailed video of the scene if possible.

It’s important not to comment on the car crash except to law enforcement. Any statements you make can be used against you. Relay facts only. Also, tell law enforcement if you feel pain or any other symptoms. *Never leave the scene of a car crash until you’ve finished talking to law enforcement.*

Get medical care
You may wonder how long you have to go to a doctor after a car crash. Our advice, seek medical treatment immediately and ask your passengers to do the same. Serious and costly injuries are not always immediately evident. If you go to a doctor right after a car crash, you have the best chance of getting the medical care you need, while maximizing your opportunity to seek compensation from crash-related medical problems.
